The origins of Mothers Day – Flowers
Mothers Day is not a new custom, it originated in Britain centuries ago and it actually has its roots in religion. In Britain, churchgoers used to worship at their nearest Parish or “Daughter” church and once a year they returned to their “home” or “Mother” church during Lent.
Historians believe that this annual return to the Mother church led to the tradition of children – particularly those in domestic service who could be as young as ten – being given the day off to visit their mother and family. On this day, children would give their mothers cards, flowers or a gift to show their appreciation for all her hard work (much like it is today). Today, most countries have declared a special day on which to honour their mothers.
Picking flowers
As the children walked home to visit their mothers, they used to pick posies of flowers to present them as small gifts.
