Is Kota my Dinosaur Really an Educational Toy?
Kota the Triceratops dinosaur is a popular toy this Christmas. Kota is a replica of a baby dinosaur. Animatronics makes Kota a munching, stomping, roaring, leaf eating realistic Triceratops that is built for kids three and older. Kota will provide kids under 60 pounds with a bouncing ride.
The question is: Should this dinosaur be considered an educational toy and would children really learn from this toy? The real Triceratops was a dinosaur about 30 feet long, 10 feet tall, and weighed up to 6-12 tons. Obviously, this small replica of a baby triceratops is not going to teach a child to appreciate the size of the real dinosaur, is it? The child might even think that because Kota is friendly that a Triceratops would be his friend. Not likely, as the animal that we have on earth today that most resembles a Triceratops is a rhinoceros and they are not friendly. Much like a rhinoceros, it had four sturdy legs and had three horns on its face. The horns on a triceratops consisted of a short horn above its parrot like beak and two longer horns that were over 3 feet long above its eyes. Its head also consisted of a large bony plate projecting from the back of its skull.
