Can You Double Your Miles Per Gallon?
That old clunker sitting in your driveway probably has a 100 miles per gallon carburetor (or electronic fuel injection system) sitting under the hood, but you probably get far less than 100 MPG when you drive anywhere except straight down a long hill. The problem is not the engine technology, but the design of the car. Modern cars gave up all the advances in fuel economy in recent years in exchange for heavier bodies, more wind resistance, and more fuel-burning bells and whistles. Unfortunately, Detroit doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to design affordable cars with 75+ miles per gallon capability any time soon. Fortunately, there are some simple things you can do to improve your gas mileage. And, it may be possible to drastically increase your car’s fuel economy by making a few do-it-yourself changes that won’t damage your engine. Read more about this intriguing possibility in Double Your MPG.
