Breeding Chinchilla – Six Tips To Help You Do It Successfully

Are you the proud owner of two chinchillas (male and female)? If you are then of course you may at some stage decide that you would like to breed from those you have. However before you begin breeding chinchillas there are certain things that one must take into consideration. So to help you when it comes to mating your chinchillas to produce offspring we offer some tips below you may find useful.

Tip 1 – You shouldn’t put the two chinchillas into the same cage immediately after bringing them home. Instead it is best to keep them in separate cages and over a period of time introduce them to each other. The best way to do this is to let them out of their cages to play together. But don’t leave them alone in the room as they may act aggressively towards each other initially. If you do find that they are happy in each other’s company then of course they can be housed in the same cage. Make sure that the cage you place them in is large enough to house them comfortably.

Tip 2 – Make sure that you introduce your chinchillas to each other before they reach the age of one year. If you don’t then you may find it far more difficult for them to actually get used to each other. Plus make sure that the female is no less than 8 or 9 months old as they will not be mature enough to breed from if younger than this.

Tip 3 – Before you start breeding chinchillas make sure that their surroundings are safe and secure. This is especially important for the females.

Tip 4- When it comes to allowing chinchillas to mate never allow the female to bath the week before or after she is going to give birth. Not only is she going to be very susceptible to infections but there is a chance that dust which clings to her teats will be ingested by her babies and cause health issues for them.

Tip 5 – For those who are looking to breed chinchillas you need to make sure that the male and female you have chosen are sound genetically. Ask those whom you have purchased the breeding chinchillas from if there are any health issues in theirs or their parents’ past. Unfortunately if you are not careful with this matter then there is a greater chance of these health problems being passed on to the chinchilla babies even before they are born.

Tip 6 – Although a waxy plug may have been left inside the female by the male following mating it does not necessarily mean that she is pregnant. If you are at all unsure as to whether the breeding has been successful then seek assistance from your veterinarian. Through carrying out an examination of your female breeding chinchilla, he or she will be able to quickly determine whether your chinchillas have successfully bred or not.
